Do You Have Blind Faith In The Blogging Process?

by David M. Doolin, PhD on September 29, 2009

A friend mentioned assuming success on “blind faith.”

The faith part is correct. The blind part, maybe not.

Most really successful bloggers assert:

If you post every day, then your search engine results will magically increase over time.

Is this true?

Writing every day sounds hard. Turns out it’s not that hard. Just takes practice.

Without experience getting a lot of search engine results, you have to take their experience on faith. Sure, it worked for them, but will it work for you? Faith that it will work for you is not a matter of the eyes, it’s a matter of the heart.

But you can leverage other people’s experience as your eyes. You won’t be taking your faith blind, you will have evidence for it.

Here’s how: pick your favorite blogger. Do what he or she advises. If it’s posting every day, do that. If it’s long articles, or short articles, write long or short articles. Measure your initial results by monitoring your traffic. You can do this by examining your server logs, by using a Google Analytics account, by using a WordPress plugin, doesn’t really matter.

Given you post interesting, quality content that people find useful, your traffic will grow over time.

I have seen it happen with my blogs!

What matters most is confronting your fear at the beginning of the journey. You have read that mastering the process leads to success.

People have told you this.

You have seen it happen.

I’ve certainly seen it happen with sites such as Zen Habits. I’ve been on the web a lot longer (since 1994)… but Leo Babuata’s process was much more effective. He started with more focus, a goal and a strategy, so he’s much more successful then all of us blogging blindly!

I’ve seen it happen with my blogs too. My traffic has doubled in the last month and a half or so by continuing to post.

It works.

Turns out you can say this about just about any “hard” thing to do ;)

Enough practice can become a habit or ritual.

That’s what I am working on implementing.
