I won’t even say which domain it is, because I believe they have a sole provider status. If I piss them off, bye bye domain. It won’t be corporate messing it up. Stuff like this happens what corporate dumps all over the technical staff… who can have a little “Oops” moment and blow my account away, “accidently.” These things happen. It’s the technical equivalent of not pissing off the wait staff in a restaurant.
The domain is an important one, too, at least to me.
The registrar requires advance payment double the annual domain name cost, and “holds” the payments in your account.
What a great business. They get to “hold” my money, earning interest on the unpaid balance. (And of course their banker probably runs a weekend sweep on it as well.)
It’s in a foreign currency.
The web site requires using a user id number, instead of your name or email address. Which you have to save and remember. This is about as far from OpenID as you can get. Vendor lockin.
The large payment I just made only took me until Feb. 2010. Vendor lockin.
If there was an alternative for registering this domain, be assured, I would use it. Just the fact they can hold money in advance tells me they are sole provider. Think about your options in the .com domain space. Hundreds of registrars. Very inexpensive.
When I get to be King, I’m going to grant myself a whole bunch of monopolies!
