Being Versus Doing: Change what you do, not who you are

by David M. Doolin, PhD on January 25, 2009

Here’s an excellent video from Chris Brogan on being who you are, even in business.

There is a compelling business case for being who you are.

In a nutshell, if being who you are isn’t working, you know what to change. You can test yourself against your audience.

Many people try to be someone different than they. When they don’t get results that way, they try being yet someone else. All the while, doing the same things that aren’t getting results!

For example: I think I’m smart, but hardly anybody reads this blog. Either I’m boring, not informative or invisible. Or maybe all three. So “smart” isn’t enough.

But negative results are still results, and being myself gives me a strong base to work from.

Instead of being someone different, I focus on doing something different.

Here’s the take home: if what you’re doing isn’t working, do something different. Don’t try to be someone different.

What’s your experience?

I read this blog, and I think you’re right. Although, this is counter to what I’m thinking will work for me. If what you’re doing isn’t working, stop crying and hustle: http://garyvaynerchuk.com/2009/01/21/112/. Find what you love, and continue doing it until it catches on. You can’t change what you love or know easily, but if you keep doing that thing…and concentrate on how that thing can be hustled, then that’s the direction you should take.

Here’s a better example: if how you’re hustling isn’t working, find a better way to spend your energy.

Brad Pitt on hustling: Like a shark. Move, or die.
