Here’s the best way I know to be a thoroughly unproductive writer:
Lock yourself in your room and don’t come out until it’s done.
When you’re struggling for ideas, and the words won’t flow, get out and about. Start some conversations with friends, or with strangers.
Talk about anything.
Let your words flow freely.
And listen attentively.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve agonized all afternoon to get something-anything down “on paper.” And it won’t flow. I’m totally stuck, and then I have to go meet friends for some reason… and our conversation totally revitalizes my writing.
Even hanging out at a bar and shooting pool can do it. I’ve come back at practically bedtime and knocked out the day’s work between 11 pm and midnight!
Now, there are times when a locking yourself in is appropriate. When you’re editing to a deadline, by all means, lock yourself in and don’t come out until it’s done. But if you’re suffering from lack of inspiration, try finding your inspiration somewhere else.
If I’m talking to you… right now… you have better things to do than surf the internet! Go outside! Get away from the computer!
I’ll be here, with more, when you get back.
