TODO items: where do they go?

by David M. Doolin, PhD on November 30, 2007

Todo lists almost universally consist of items allowing a binary state: todo, or done. This does not reflect my reality. In reality, items on my todo lists (there are many) could take the following states:

  • todo: hasn’t been done yet, is supposed to be done at some future time.
  • done: has been done, exactly as item is listed, by me, on the date I actually do that thing.
  • done: has been done, exactly as item is listed, by me, on some other date than the date I check the todo item as being done.
  • done: somebody else did it for me, or in spite of me, or whatever
  • irrelevant: hasn’t been done, won’t be done, reasons may be important (house burned down, no need to clean toilet)
  • morphed: wasn’t done, but something solving the same problem was done instead.
  • More? You tell me…
