there is no box
(Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes)
Have you ever been told “Think outside the box?”
Does that annoy as you as much as it annoys me?
Here’s a clue: There is no box.
Breaking all the rules
There Is NO Box is a technical diary. It’s not a marketing blog, although there is marketing here. It’s not an advertising “money making machine,” although there is advertising here.
What you find posted here are articles covering every aspect of entrepreneurship, from coding, to accounting, management and productivity… from big picture strategy and touchy-feely “inner game” articles, down to the nuts and bolts of extremely technical issues in programming, writing and marketing. This violates every single rule of “blogging” success… which asserts that you must pick a narrow niche and focus exclusively on a limited scope of material. And that’s fine for a “money making machine.” I’m building some of those too, just not here.
As an entrepreneur, we both know that’s garbage in the real world.
In the real world, running a real business, no matter how well you plan your day, your week, your month, something invariably comes along to upset your apple cart. Maybe one of your websites got hacked. Maybe an incredible business opportunity just landed in your email. Perhaps your personal life just blew up. If it’s not one thing, it’s three others.
What you read on There Is NO Box reflects that reality.
Breadth versus depth—a technical diary
Entrepreneurs almost by definition are jacks of all trades, masters of none.
You won’t find every post here relevant… that’s as it should be. I’m building a software-based business, you probably run a different business than I do.
But we’re both in business, and that’s matters most!
And each post, or certainly each category is just the tip of the iceberg… go deeper when you have to, keeping the bottom line in sight.
If you run a small, internet-oriented business, you will find actionable information on a regular basis. If you just so happen to be in the software business as well, you’re definitely in the right place. Help for running a web site based on WordPress and BBPress, notes on programming in general and in detail, discussion on business structures, accounting, finance, software, productivity, and much more, it’s all here (or will be shortly, to be sure).
There’s more…
Where else can you find killer music and reading recommendations, right along with handy source listings? Right here. I like to listen to music while I work, and sometimes, I’ll let you know what I’m listening to. I have a vast collection of books from a wide variety of interesting genres (math, engineering, history, fiction, programming, more), you will see some of them reviewed here as well.
This page, and the name, is dedicated to Gene Kan, whose bon mots inspired a revolution among his friends, colleagues and peers around the world. RIP.
There Is NO Box is an Inventium Systems Special Project.
